QUESTION:
What is the recommended amount of sodium to consume in one day?
ANSWER:
This depends on your current health as far as blood pressure, heart condition, and kidney condition. The FDA recommends 2400 mg a day max but I personally probably consume around 7000-8000 mg of sodium per day. I don't see this as a problem for me given that i have normal blood pressure and a healthy heart/kidneys. I drink around 2.5-3 gallons of water per day in order to stay healthy in general but also to ensure that my kidneys are flushing the extra sodium out of my body.
But as always, and especially with this topic, consult a physician before altering your diet.

Tony, I just can't believe the misconception of sodium levels and compared health level. The national school lunch programs just recently reauthorized the nutritional guidelines. The acceptable sodium levels are ridiculously low! Basically, it's the same recommended level as a senior in poor health! I mean come on, sodium adds flavor and now the kids don't want to eat that lousy school lunch anymore. Trash removal by volume has increased up to 27% in some large districts. The kids are throwing their lunch away! Our obesity in youth problem in the USA is linked more to trans fats and the lack of exercise than anything. They are so stringent on nutritionals but have eliminated or minimized recess and outdoor play/activity, gym is a joke and the kids have little or no opportunity to burn calories!
ReplyDeleteI say, put the salt shaker back into your diet table and get active, drink a lot of water and you'll live a happy, healthy and flavorful life! I respect that you come clean with your intake, your honesty just builds integrity into your "TIPS". Great work!
