How to Choose Healthy on Vacation


Spring break, weekend trips, camping, summer vacation - we look forward to any of these breaks in our normal routine.  I was recently asked how to make healthy choices while on vacation.  Unfortunately, many people gain several pounds while away, but do you know what?  It's possible to have a good time and still make healthy choices.

With a little bit of effort you can still work out to a certain degree, make good food choices for most of your meals, and choose nutritious snacks.  I went to one of my favorite websites - Livestrong and found a great article for you to read here.

Eating the Right Foods at the Right Time


Knowing what to eat and when to eat it is a difficult thing to determine.  Your body requires different types of fuel depending on what you're doing.  What you eat after a tough workout session is totally different from what you'll need to eat while sitting through a meeting at work.

So go over to this Livestrong website to get some great tips on what and when to eat.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are going to start to come in season.  What are you eating?  Right now I'm still eating apples everyday, as well as fresh oranges and watermelon.

Spring is here and the snow is melting.  Who is getting outside and starting their walking, hiking or running routines?

Boost Your Metabolism


Did you know that there are ways to help boost your metabolism?  If you speed up your metabolism, you help your body convert calories from food into fuel.

Eat good snacks - like carrots, melons and grapes.  If you deprive your body of too many calories, it goes into starvation mode and your metabolism slows down.  So eat small portions of these foods throughout the day.

Take vitamins -  the B vitamins can boost energy and thus raise your metabolism.

Most people think that being on a diet means they have to starve themselves   Not so!  Try eating more frequently, just be sure to choose healthy foods in moderation.

Walking is Good for You


A lot of people are apprehensive about exercising or starting a work out program.  What to do, how many reps, how much weight, whats the best exercise to do?  But starting out doesn't have to be hard at all.  I started by simply walking and it was a great decision for me.  I still walk on my treadmill almost every day.  I like to walk at an incline and at a quick pace.  But you can start out slower at first and work up to a good power walk.

Think about it -

  • Walking is relatively easy to do
  • You can do it almost anyplace
  • You can do it alone or with a buddy
  • It doesn't require a gym membership or any special equipment
Walking is very low impact, so it's a great beginner program and as you gain strength and endurance, you can add more distance or progress to running.  Another plus is that it gets you outside and breathing some fresh air.
